Today My Favorite Manga: Hayate No Gotoku (Hayate The Combat Butler)

Huff... Yesterday, I have seen a interesting manga, 'Hayate The Combat Butler' (Hayate No Gotoku) that owned by my friend, Edo. Oh man, that's cool!!! So creative. Althougt it is enough "difficult" to non-anime/manga or Japanese stuffs lover (otaku) to understand the story, but, this manga still have a sense.

Oke, let see the review from Wikipedia, before.

Hayate the Combat Butler (ハヤテのごとく!, Hayate no Gotoku!?) is a Japanese manga series, written by manga author Kenjiro Hata, about a boy who starts a new job as a butler and the events he experiences with his employer. The manga is currently on its fifteenth volume in Japan. The English edition of the series has been licensed by Viz Media for distribution in North America. The style of the manga has a comedic gag with a slight harem feel and constantly breaks the fourth wall. The series includes references to other anime, manga, video games, and popular culture.

An anime adaptation of the manga started airing on April 1, 2007, and ended on March 30, 2008 on TV Tokyo. A second anime season of Hayate the Combat Butler was officially confirmed for production by TV Tokyo on the official site on March 31, 2008, and in Shōnen Sunday volume eighteen, released on April 2, 2008. Another such announcement immediately followed the ending credits of the final episode of season one. On July 4, 2008, Bandai Entertainment announced that they have licensed the anime series.

Hayate Ayasaki is an unlucky teenager who worked since childhood to make ends meet due to his parents' irresponsible behavior. One day he finds out that his parents ran away from home, leaving behind a massive gambling debt on his shoulders. While running away from the debt collectors, he ends up meeting Nagi Sanzen'in, a young girl who is the sole heir of the wealthy Sanzen'in estate, and due to a misunderstanding, Nagi ends up falling in love with Hayate. After he rescues Nagi from some kidnappers, she hires Hayate as her new butler.

Aside from performing his ordinary duties as a butler, Hayate must fight to protect Nagi from harm, a difficult task as her life is always in danger because she is the target of other individuals coveting her family's fortune, and sometimes deal with some extravagant requests from her, oblivious to Nagi's true feelings for him.

- Main characters

Hayate Ayasaki (綾崎 ハヤテ, Ayasaki Hayate?)
Voiced by: Ryōko Shiraishi

(Right: Hayate, Left: Nagi)

Hayate, sixteen, has had to work to support his parents' bad habits since the age of eight, always moving from job to job, as he is fired when he is discovered to be underage. Hayate's dad is unemployed and his mother is a compulsive gambler, which leads inevitably to their bankruptcy. They abandoned Hayate after attempting to sell his organs to the Yakuza to ease their financial burdens. Without many choices left to him, Hayate decides to hold someone for ransom. He finds a girl, Nagi Sanzen'in, and tells her that he would "like to take her away". However, Nagi mistakes his words for his confession of love, and Hayate ends up employed as Nagi's new butler.

Characters in the series continually remark that Hayate looks poor and seedy. He believes that everyone hates him except children, though he doesn't think of children as being anything other than friends. Hayate sees Nagi as a little sister that needs to be looked after. He can also play the violin. Despite his terrible luck, Hayate lives up to the title of "combat butler" as he is proficient in repelling attacks from almost anything, including other butlers. He once demonstrated skill with fire-arms and is essentially invincible. He is also continually teased throughout the series as being physically feminine, and Nagi and Maria constantly dress him up in dresses and women's clothes.

Nagi Sanzen'in (三千院 ナギ, Sanzen'in Nagi?)
Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya

Nagi, thirteen, is the only heir to the Sanzen'in fortune. She is a tsundere and has an otaku-level hobby with manga and anime, and draws her own manga. She is good at finances and likes to learn. She has a pet tiger named Tama. She has a crush on Hayate, and, since meeting Hayate, has acted on the misconception that the feeling was reciprocated. Her only surviving family is her grandfather, whom she doesn't like. She regards Maria as a mother or older sister figure, and warns Hayate not to touch Maria in any indecent way. Nagi is afraid of dark places and has a history of making potentially lethal mistakes when cooking.

Maria (マリア, Maria?)
Voiced by: Rie Tanaka

(Right: Nagi, Left: Maria)

Maria, seventeen, is Nagi's maid and surrogate older sister/mother. She plays the voice of reason in the series, and is the only one who understands the problem between Hayate and Nagi. She appears to be the one running everything in Nagi's manor, since everyone including the head butler and the SP either obeys or fears her (or both in some cases). She is good at general housework and likes games of all kinds, though she is deathly afraid of cockroaches, which she refers to as "the dark life-form that exists in the kitchen and other places".

She has no last name because she was an orphan who was found next to the statue of St. Mary at a church, which she is named after. The day she was found, December 24, is celebrated as her birthday. She has seen Hayate naked several times, and she sees the effect he has on other girls, many of whom are attracted to him for his kind nature. Maria is also legendary throughout the school for having graduated from high school at the age of thirteen, in just three years, while maintaining the position of Student Council President throughout. She has also won numerous amount of awards while holding the best grades in history of the school.

---

The coolness of this manga is its joke, that targeted otaku (Japanese stuff lovers) and and this manga also have something or what, that make it so special. Hayate The Combat Butler is really targeted to the otaku crowd. If you’re into the memes and other typical otaku stuff (like Gundam… ick) I could suggest this manga. If not, you’ll just be a little confused. This manga seriously needs translator’s notes (thankfully, there is sone notes in Indonesian version).

So, don't forget to see this manga!!!

Today My Favorite Manga: Law of Ueki +

After a "painfully" anime show from Global TV of "Law of Ueki" (because of the bad cutting and editting... sigh!) , I want to share a manga, "Law of Ueki +" (Law of Ueki Plus). It is a good manga, I say. Let me copy a review from Wikipedia.

The Law of Ueki PLUS (うえきの法則プラス, Ueki no Hōsoku PURASU?) is a Japanese manga sequel to the manga and anime The Law of Ueki written and illustrated by Tsubasa Fukuchi. It was serialized in the weekly manga magazine Shōnen Sunday. The series has ended with 46 chapters which compiled into five tankōbon volumes that was published by Shogakukan.

Two years after the tournament in The Law of Ueki, Kosuke Ueki is now a 3rd year student in Hinokuni High School. For some reason, everyone in the real world has lost their memory of their most important person, including his friends who participated in the tournament two years ago. Ueki is the only one unaffected, and is fighting in order to restore everyone's memories. He follows a little sheep named U-lu (Wool) to another world called Hankagai where he meets new companions and gains new abilities.

Hankagai

"Hankagai" (繁華界, "Hankagai"?) was the original dimension that split long before humans populated it. Hankagai remains the same, whereas the mirror dimension which was spawned by the splitting was additionally split into "Heaven", "Hell", and the "Human" world. Both Hankagai and the mirror dimension where Ueki originates are on equal footing of development and characteristics. But the "Human" world's 1 year equals to 100 years of Hankagai, which means earth spins fully around the sun equals to one year but Hankagai is 100 years. And it also means some parts of Hankagai are 100 years advanced than the "Human" world.

The currency of Hankagai is Roude(read as "road")(R). One Roude is equilivant to one Yen.

Power used in Hankagai

The powers that exist in Hankagai are know as "Job powers". Every power user in Hankagai needs a "item seal" on his or her right palm which stores the 'item' they need to do their 'job'. As an example, a janitor would have a broom as his item stored in the seal on his right palm. Once the item is sealed, the user can summon it anytime they please. While all Job Power Users can summon an item and use it how they wish, they cannot necessarily use the item at it's full capacity. In order to achieve this, the power user must have the willpower and need for this- perhaps in extenuating circumstances where one's life is on the line. If the user is able to achieve it, a Chinese character will appear on the user's left palm which represents a new way in which they can apply their job power.

Job Power Seals

Job power users can have two tattoos. the tattoo on the right palm is called the "item seal", and is used for sealing the item. The seal on the left palm is called the "effect seal", and determines the new way the power user can use his or her item.

Job Power users

Job power users are divided into two categories: Job power user and "HanJob" (ハンジョブ, "HanJob"?) or half-job power user. The difference between the two is that half-job power users can summon their item, but have not yet acquired an effect seal.

Characters

Nagara's laundry shop

Kosuke Ueki (植木 耕助 Ueki Kōsuke)
  • Job power: the ability to apply Grab (掴(ガチ) Gachi) on a mop.
Unlike in original series where Kosuke Ueki had the power to transform trash into trees and the sacred weapons, Ueki starts this series powerless (since he can't use his god powers or sacred treasures or he would lose his last two zai). He follows Wool to Hankagai and with the help of Nagara he discovers a new power.
When the mop is applied with this power, the mop is able to stretch as long as the user pleases. It also can be stretched to turn directions at the user's whim, but it has a restriction; it cannot grab things that the user cannot see.
Wool (ウール U-lu)
A sheep from Hankagai, who insists he is a dog. He has 3 forms: one where he acts quite human (he can talk and smoke) and the other where he acts like a dog (and only barks), the third form is as known as it's original form where Ueki's rainbow coloured mop's pole plug-into the back of Wool and transform into a huge winged-sheep-like creature. But the original form can only be awaken by the recognized mop-holding master of Wool. While in it's original form, Ueki can apply his "Grab" effect on Wool as Wool's indestructible wools can act like Ueki's mop. In human mode, his attitude is similar to a rude uncle. His fur is very defensive and can withstand almost any sort of impact. In order to restore the cube (the lost memories of an important person) in his body, he must be taken to a place called "MegaSide" in Hankagai.
Nagara (ナガラ)
  • Job power: The ability to apply Therapy (癒(テラピ) Terapi) on an hourglass.
A 22 year-old shopkeeper of the Nagara's Laundry Shop. He may be the shopkeeper of the shop, but he is actually very bad at operating washing-machines. He is Purasu(PLUS)'s little brother. As a job-power user, he is somewhat strong- every team that participated in the competition always kept an eye on him and his team. In order to help Ueki and achieve his own success, he used the name of the shop to participate in the competition.
Nagara's hourglass absorbs the damage that is caused by attackers. The more damage that is absorbed, the more volume of healing therapy is stored.
Haiji (ハイジ)
  • Job Power: The ability to apply Gun (撃(ガン) Gan) on a washing machine.
Age 17. He loves to fight and loves animals- Hence, every time he throws punches or attack moves, he will mention the name of that attack as he has named them after some form of animal. For example, "アカアナグマ百楼拳" ("Akaana Bear Hundred Floor Punches!") or "スコティッシュ29球拳" ("Scottish 29 ball Punches!"), etc. Haiji is Milee's older brother, and ever since their parents had passed away, they had to live together with Nagara. Haiji has somewhat of a sister complex, and is overly protective of Milee.
He can summon a 3 ton, small washing machine on his knuckle as a weapon. The Gun, when applied to the washing machine, gives it an advantage to shoot out water-element shots or beams. Haiji can fire attacks like "トルネード撃(ガン)砲(キャノン) ("Tornado Gun Cannon") or "撃(ガン)MAX ("Gun MAX"), etc.
Milee (ミリー)
Milee is Haiji's little sister. She loves animals just like her brother. Watching his brother struggling just to protect her and all the innocent little animals from bullies, she gets upset. At the same time, she is happy because although Haiji was called a bully or spoiled child, she knew that her big brother never wanted to fight back like a bully. All Haiji wanted was to protect her.
Sora (ソラ)
  • Job Power: The ability to apply Double (倍(ダブル) Daburu) on a hamburger.
Sora is a hamburger loving, 14 year-old teenage girl. At times, she acts silly, but she is alert and good at teamwork. She lives in the orphanage's home. Sometimes, she will come to Nagara's laundry shop and play with Milee. She has her own law on burgers: "As a good burger-lover, I should punish those other burger-lovers who illegally steal other people's burgers!"
Whenever she eats a hamburger applied with that power, everything on her doubles:
  • Deka Sora (デカソラ): Doubles her size and become a tall, powerful giant.
  • Bi-Sora (バイソラ): Doubles her personality, splits into two Sora's without any side effects.
  • Haya-Sora (ハヤソラ): Doubles her speed, she can run twice as fast.
  • Kata-Sora (カタソラ): Doubles her strength, she is twice as strong.
  • Tobi-Sora (トビソラ): Doubles her jumping skills, her jumping length is doubled.
  • Bi-Haya Sora (バイハヤソラ): Her secret move. Allows 2 Sora's to use increased speed at the same time. Sometimes, depending on Sora, it doesn't work well.

So, don't forget to see this manga!!!
